What to check if you have old or outdated API connections

Welcome back to 3Commas! If you’ve been away for a while, we’ve made several updates to improve security and enhance your trading experience. To ensure everything works smoothly, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you reconnect and resolve any potential issues.


What to Check First: API Keys and Exchange Connections

When returning to 3Commas, outdated or revoked API keys are one of the most common issues. Here’s how to identify and resolve problems:

Symptoms of Outdated API Keys

  • Invalid API messages or alerts in active trades.

  • UPNL not updating in Bot trades or SmartTrades.

  • Issues canceling, closing, or starting new trades.

  • Problems loading your exchange account balances.

How to Check Your API Keys

  1. Navigate to the My Portfolio page.

  2. Look for any error messages, such as:

    • “API key revoked.”

    • “Invalid API key.”

  3. Click the refresh button next to your connected exchange account. If there’s an issue, you’ll see a prompt to update your API key.

How to Update Your API Keys

  1. Click the red Update API Key button or select Update API Key from the three-dot menu.

  2. Log in to your exchange account and delete any old API keys.

  3. Generate a new API key and Secret. If supported, use Fast Connect for a quicker and more secure setup.

Note

  • All 3Commas connections now require IP whitelisting for enhanced security. Fast Connect automatically applies the required IP whitelisted addresses, making it the preferred method for connecting exchanges.

  • Sub Accounts: Do not use Fast Connect for Sub Accounts. Use classic API key connections instead.


Possible Issues and How to Resolve Them

1. Failed or Canceled trades

When API keys are revoked or outdated, active SmartTrades or DCA Bot trades may fail or be marked as canceled. Don’t worry—you can recreate these trades.

  • Futures Trades: Follow this guide to take control of an orphaned position on your exchange account.

  • Spot Trades: Follow this guide to create a Smart Sell or Smart Buy trade.

2. Locked Funds

If your available balance appears lower than expected on the Portfolio page, funds may be locked in active Limit Orders.

How to Check and Unlock Funds:

  1. Use the Opened Orders widget to identify active orders.

  2. Match the order ID with active SmartTrades or DCA Bot trades.

  3. If you find leftover orders from completed trades, log in to your exchange account and manually delete them.


Stay Secure with IP Whitelisting

All API connections now require IP whitelisting. This security feature ensures only approved IP addresses can access your exchange account. If you’re using Fast Connect, the IP whitelisting is applied automatically. For manual API connections, refer to our IP whitelisting guide for detailed instructions.
