What is KYC & Why Do I Need It?

What is KYC?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is a mandatory identity verification process that ensures compliance with financial regulations. It helps prevent fraud, money laundering, and other illegal activities in crypto trading.

Why is KYC Required for Existing Users?

All 3Commas users in the EEA must complete AML checks (part of the KYC process) before making a new subscription payment or upgrading their current plan. This requirement is in effect since April 2025 to support compliance with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).

This ensures:

  • Compliance with EU financial regulations

  • Safe and secure access to crypto trading

  • Fraud prevention and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) enforcement

Who Needs to Complete KYC?

Important for EEA users

At this time, EEA residents must complete KYC. For the fastest approval, use an ID issued by your current country of residence. Using ID from a non‑EEA country while residing in the EEA can lead to rejection.

KYC is required for:

  • New users in the EEA creating a 3Commas account

  • Existing EEA users who wish to continue using 3Commas during and after April 2025

  • Anyone from the EEA who wants to trade crypto or connect an exchange via API

Without KYC, access to trading, subscriptions, and subscription upgrades will be restricted.

KYC Process for Existing EEA Users: Step-by-Step

1. KYC Notification in Your 3Commas Account (Existing users)

  • When KYC is required for your 3Commas user account, you will see a KYC verification prompt in a banner at the top of the 3Commas Web Interface.

  • Clicking the notification will redirect you to the verification page.

Important

  • You will see a notification prompting you to complete your KYC verification before your next subscription payment date. This is required to ensure uninterrupted access to 3Commas services. If verification is not completed before the payment date, your account may be restricted.

  • VPN Advisory: If you’re in the EEA but don’t see the KYC banner, ensure you’re visiting 3commas.eu and not 3commas.io. Disable any VPN or proxy that may reroute your location.

  • Banner Not Appearing? If you don't see the KYC banner, your account country settings may not show as an EEA country. Please contact 3Commas Support to check and update your account if needed.

2. Start the KYC Verification Process

  • KYC is completed via J2TX, a 3Commas KYC partner.

  • While KYC is pending, you can browse the app, but trading is restricted. Unverified accounts are limited to demo trading only.

  • You must click “Start Verification” and provide the necessary documents.

  • Upload a government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID card).

  • Upload a recent selfie or photo.

3. User Details Collection

  • A new form collects the following information:

    • First name

    • Last name

    • Phone number

    • Email address

    • Residence

  • Economic profile:

    • Your net worth (in USD)

    • Your annual net income (in USD)

    • Which amount (in USD) do you intend to invest in financial instruments.

    • Employment status

    • Sector

Important

Please ensure that the information you provide is accurate and realistic. This data is continuously monitored, and significant deviations between declared financial details and actual deposits may trigger a compliance review. Providing accurate details upfront helps avoid unnecessary delays or additional verification requests.

  • Select your country of residence.

  • Choose your document to upload (Driver's license or ID card).

KYC Tip

  • For the quickest application processing, submit documents issued in the country where you currently reside.

  • If your passport is from a different country, consider providing an alternative document, such as a photo driver’s license from your current country of residence, along with a utility bill from the same country. Using ID from a non-EEA country while residing in the EEA may cause your application to be rejected.

  • Proof of Residence (See list here)

  • Acknowledgement

  • Confirmation

4. Application Review & Status Updates

  • After submission, you will receive an “Application Under Review” status.

  • Status updates will be sent via email from [email protected]. In some cases, J2TX may also contact you via SMS for verification purposes. Please ensure your contact information is accurate during the KYC process.

  • Review time: The median approval is 19 minutes, but some cases, especially rejections or manual reviews, may take up to 11 hours or more. Most applications are reviewed within 24 hours.

  • You will be notified via email once verification is completed.

5. KYC Completion & Account Access

  • If your verification is successful, you will receive a "Verified" status.

  • You can now continue using 3Commas without restrictions.

FAQ

As of March 26th, 2025, 3Commas services in the EEA are now operated by J2TX Ltd., a company registered with the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) under registration number 006/22.

1. When will I need to perform my KYC check?

The KYC check process is being conducted in batches. You will receive a banner notification at the top of the web interface when it’s time for you to complete the KYC check.

If you see a specific deadline (e.g., May 11, 2025), it means you must complete KYC before that date to keep your subscription active. If KYC is not completed, your plan will not renew and access will be restricted once it expires.

2. What Info Will I Need to Provide?

To complete KYC verification, you will need:

  • A government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, national ID card, or residence permit).

  • Proof of Residence

    • Accepted: Bank Statements, Utility Bills (not older than 3 months), Internet/Cable TV, (house phone line bills, Tax Returns, Council tax bills, Government-issued certifications of residence, etc.)

    • Not Accepted: Screenshots, Mobile phone bills, Medical bills, Receipts for purchases, Insurance statements

  • A recent selfie or photo for identity verification.

3. What Are the Different KYC Statuses and What Do They Mean?

Your KYC status will determine your account access:

KYC Status

Description

Incomplete

You have not started the KYC process yet. Trading and subscription purchases are restricted until verification is completed.

Started

You have filled out the first page of the KYC form but have not submitted the full application yet. Verification cannot proceed until all required steps are completed.

Pending

Your verification is under review. Median approval time is about 19 minutes, and most reviews are completed within 24 hours.

Approved

You have successfully passed all verification checks.

Rejected

Your verification was unsuccessful. You must re-submit your documents after addressing the issues (see troubleshooting below).

4. Why Was My KYC Verification Rejected?

Here are the most common reasons and how to fix them:

Issue

Solution

Blurry or unreadable ID

Upload a clearer image of your document.

Mismatched information

Ensure the name and details match exactly as shown on your ID.

Expired ID

Upload a valid, non-expired document.

Poor lighting in selfie check

Ensure good lighting, no obstructions, and follow on-screen prompts correctly.

Note: You can retry verification after correcting these issues.

5. What Should I Do If I Encounter a KYC System Error?

  • If there is a KYC service issue, you will see a system error message.

  • Possible causes:

    • Temporary service disruption

    • High system traffic

    • Connection timeout

  • Try the following to resolve it:

    • Refresh your browser and retry.

    • Clear your browser cache & cookies.

    • Try using a different browser or device.

    • Wait and attempt again later (high traffic or temporary service issues may cause delays).

    • Check status.3commas.io for real-time updates on any ongoing KYC-related issues.

6. How long does KYC approval or rejection usually take?

Based on recent data:

  • Median approval time: 19 minutes

  • Median rejection time: 11 hours

  • Over 80% of reviews (approval or rejection) are completed within 24 hours

If your application is delayed beyond that, it may be due to:

  • High system load

  • Additional document checks

  • Manual review flags

If you haven’t received an update after 24 hours, check your spam folder for an email from [email protected]. You may also reach out to them directly if needed.

7. What should I do if I have already completed the KYC verification but still cannot purchase a subscription?

If you have already completed KYC but still cannot purchase or upgrade a subscription:

  • Try logging out and back into your account to refresh your status.

  • If the issue persists, contact 3Commas Support and provide your KYC confirmation email from J2TX.

8. What is the point of asking for KYC identification if exchanges already require it?

Even if your connected exchanges require KYC, 3Commas must also complete its own KYC/AML checks. In line with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), all EEA users are required to pass 3Commas verification before making a new subscription payment or upgrading their plan.

9. My KYC has been pending for a long time. What should I do?

Most reviews are finished within 24 hours. If your application is pending longer, check your email (including spam) and SMS for messages from J2TX. They may have requested additional documents. If you haven’t received any communication, contact J2TX at [email protected].

10. What happens if I don’t complete KYC by the deadline?

If you don’t complete KYC by your specified deadline:

  • Subscription will not renew and will be paused at renewal

  • Bots will be stopped

  • Trading and automation blocked until KYC approval

  • Demo trading only

11. The KYC banner doesn’t appear in my browser. What should I do?

The KYC banner should display at the top of the 3Commas web interface. If you don’t see it:

  • Ensure you’re visiting 3commas.eu (not .io).

  • Disable VPNs/proxies.

  • Clear your browser cache/cookies or try another browser/device.

If the banner still doesn’t appear, contact 3Commas Support.
