E-Signature

A digital alternative to handwritten signatures, used to authorize documents or transactions electronically. In crypto, e-signatures may confirm smart contract terms or approve wallet connections.

Economic Utility

A concept that measures the personal value or satisfaction gained from using a product or service. In crypto, tokens may derive utility from governance rights, fee discounts, or access to products.

Edge Nodes

Devices or computers that act as intermediaries between a user and a distributed network. In decentralized systems, edge nodes reduce latency by processing data closer to the end-user.

Effective Proof-of-Stake

Harmony’s take on PoS, designed to balance network security and decentralization. It discourages validator dominance by limiting rewards based on stake concentration.

EIP-1559

A major Ethereum upgrade that introduced a base fee for transactions and a deflationary burn mechanism. It replaced the old gas auction model and made transaction fees more predictable.

Electrum Wallet

A lightweight Bitcoin wallet known for its speed and ease of use. It doesn’t require users to download the full blockchain and supports cold storage and hardware wallet integration.

ELI5

Short for “Explain Like I’m 5,” this is a call for simplifying complex crypto ideas using plain, beginner-friendly language—common in education and Help Center content.

Elliott Waves

A market theory suggesting that price trends move in predictable cycles based on investor psychology. Often used in technical analysis alongside tools like RSI or Fibonacci retracements.

EMA (Exponential Moving Average)

A technical indicator that smooths price data by applying more weight to recent prices. EMAs are used in many 3Commas bot strategies to signal trend shifts.

Email Spoofing

A phishing technique that forges the sender’s email address to trick users into believing the message is legitimate. Often used in scams targeting crypto users and platforms.

Emission

The rate at which new cryptocurrency tokens are created and released. Some protocols use fixed schedules, while others adjust emission based on supply or inflation targets.

Encryption

The process of converting readable data into a secure format. In crypto, encryption protects user wallets, private keys, and communication between nodes.

Enterprise Blockchain

A private or permissioned blockchain solution tailored for corporate use. These systems prioritize scalability, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance over decentralization.

Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA)

A business-focused group that promotes Ethereum adoption by developing standards and best practices for enterprise-grade applications.

Epoch

In blockchain or machine learning, an epoch is a complete cycle of data processing. In crypto staking, epochs often define reward periods or validator rotations.

Equity

Ownership in an asset, business, or protocol. In traditional finance, equity reflects shareholder value; in crypto, tokens may represent equity-like voting or reward rights.

Erasure Coding

A data redundancy method that breaks information into fragments and stores them across multiple locations. Used in decentralized storage systems to boost reliability and fault tolerance.

ERC-7512

A proposed Ethereum standard to represent and verify audit reports directly on-chain, adding transparency to smart contract security claims.

ERC-1155

A token standard that allows the creation of both fungible and non-fungible tokens in a single smart contract. Popular in gaming and NFT applications.

ERC-20

The most widely adopted Ethereum token standard, defining how fungible tokens operate on the network. Used by thousands of projects for governance, utility, and DeFi integration.

ERC-223

An Ethereum token standard that improves token transfer safety by preventing accidental transfers to incompatible contracts.

ERC-721

A standard for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Ethereum, ensuring that each token is unique and verifiably owned. Used in art, collectibles, and gaming.

ERC-7683

A universal cross-chain transaction standard that simplifies multi-step, multi-chain processes into a single request—useful for DApps spanning multiple blockchains.

ERC-777

A token standard that extends ERC-20 with advanced features like hooks and operator functionality, allowing tokens to react to interactions natively.

ERC-827

A proposed token standard that builds on ERC-20 to allow more flexible calls and permissions during transfers or approvals.

ERC-884

A compliance-focused token standard designed for issuing tokenized shares of Delaware-based corporations on Ethereum.

ERC-948

A token model tailored for subscription services, enabling recurring payments and access-based token usage directly through smart contracts.

Escrow

A system where a trusted third party holds funds or assets during a transaction, releasing them only when certain conditions are met. On-chain escrows can be enforced via smart contracts.

Esports

Competitive video gaming played individually or in teams, often for prize pools or sponsorships. Some crypto platforms integrate NFTs or tokens into esports ecosystems for rewards and identity.

ETH/BTC

A trading pair that represents the value of Ethereum priced in Bitcoin. Traders use this pair to assess Ethereum’s strength relative to Bitcoin rather than fiat.

Ethash

Ethereum’s original Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining algorithm, designed to be ASIC-resistant. It was phased out following Ethereum’s transition to Proof-of-Stake (The Merge).

Ether (ETH)

The native cryptocurrency of Ethereum. Used to pay for transaction fees (gas), interact with smart contracts, and secure the network through staking.

Ethereum Difficulty

A metric that determines how hard it is to mine a block. Difficulty adjusts to maintain consistent block times and was essential in Ethereum’s PoW era.

Ethereum ETF

An investment fund that tracks the price of Ether and trades on traditional stock exchanges. Ethereum ETFs make crypto accessible to institutional and retail investors without needing a wallet.

Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)

A formal document used by Ethereum developers to propose upgrades or changes to the network, ranging from core protocol tweaks to token standards.

Ethereum Request For Comment (ERC)

A standardization process that defines how tokens and contracts should behave on Ethereum. ERCs lead to widely adopted token types like ERC-20 or ERC-721.

Ethereum Transaction

A signed operation that modifies the Ethereum blockchain—this includes token transfers, contract calls, and staking actions.

Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)

The computation engine that executes smart contracts on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains. It ensures consistency across all Ethereum nodes.

Event Triggers

Mechanisms in smart contracts that emit logs or signals when specific actions occur. Frontend apps use these logs to update UIs or trigger follow-up actions.

Exchange

A marketplace where users trade cryptocurrencies for other digital assets or fiat currencies. Exchanges may be centralized (CEX) or decentralized (DEX), and many integrate with 3Commas.

Exchange Traded Fund (ETF)

A tradable security that tracks the value of a basket of assets. In crypto, ETFs can provide price exposure to BTC or ETH without requiring users to hold the asset directly.

Exit Scam

When a crypto project or exchange disappears after collecting funds, leaving investors with worthless or inaccessible assets. Often associated with rug pulls and fake ICOs.
